Apple Picks up iPods.com Domain Name for Free
Apple has recently won a World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) case over the domain name iPods.com.
The case that Apple have won basically forces the present owner to transfer ownership of the domain iPods.com to the company for free.
In the past Apple has paid out millions of dollars to buy domains such as icloud.com or iPhone.com however for iPods.com they decided to take the case to WIPO instead of paying out anything.
WIPO have not made their decision publicly available. However by looking at the WHOIS records it appears that as the domain was registered 6 months after the release of the first iPod, Apple would have had a very good case.
This ruling by WIPO will probably open the door for other companies to file complaints over domain names linked to their brand name or products. It may also mean the end to people buying up domain names in the hope that one day they will sell them off for millions of dollars.
